In the first eight months this year, Croatia recorded 16.9 million tourists arriving and 89.4 millions overnight stays, which represents increases of four percent and one percent respectively, compared to last year.
Tonci Glavina of Croatia’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports said that Germany, Slovenia and Austria contributed the most tourists to Croatia during the period of January-August, with 2.5 million, 1.4 millions, and 1.26million arrivals, respectively. Greece will introduce a 20 euro levy for cruise ship visitors in peak summer on Santorini & Mykonos to prevent overtourism. Prime Minister Kyriakos mitsotakis said that a part of the revenues will be invested in local facilities. The government is also planning to regulate cruise ship landings and protect the environmental.
Glavina stated that the figures aligned with the country’s tourism strategic goals, which focus on growth during the preseason and postseason while aiming to keep the same number of visitors or even lower during peak tourist months. According to the Croatian National Bank the country’s tourism revenue is expected to grow by four per cent this year, reaching a new record of 15,2 billion euros (16.78 million US dollars).
