Laos welcomed 2.6 million foreign tourists in the first eight-month period of 2024. This is a 19% increase from the 2.2 million visitors during the same period the previous year. Thailand, Vietnam, China and Laos were the top three sources of foreign visitors to Laos between January and August, Xinhua reported, citing The Lao Economic Daily on Saturday.
Laos also saw an increase of 84.2 percent in domestic travel trips during the eight-month period. The Southeast Asian country generated approximately USD 801 million in revenue so far this season from international tourism.
The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos hopes that over 6 million Lao and international tourists will visit Laos by 2024. In an effort to boost tourist numbers during Visit Laos Year 2020, the government approved visa-free entries and extended the length of stay for tourists coming from certain countries.
The Lao government also organised a national tour guides training course in order to increase the number of qualified personnel in the tourism sector and to address the shortage in this field.
