The Chinese government points out that the Golden Week, which began on October 1, may not necessarily lead to more spending from those who travel in and out of China.

Due to China’s economic slowdown and historically low confidence in consumers, many people will be taking longer holidays for the holiday. However, they intend to stay within their budget.

Most have chosen to fly to cheaper domestic destinations or closer overseas destinations. This is because of the recent drop in airfares by a number airlines.

Golden Week has traditionally been the peak travel period in China, when Chinese nationals book overseas trips to enjoy their long holidays. The authorities predict a modest increase in the number of trips taken by the transportation sector, which is expected to be around 0.7 percent higher than the previous year.

Staying longer

According to Flight Master’s data, domestic airfares for China are 21 per cent cheaper than last year. Meanwhile, international economy class airfares have dropped by around 25 per cent compared to 2023 and by 7 percent compared to 2019.

Many Chinese still prefer to spend their holidays in Asia, especially in Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.

Chinese online travel agency Trip.com noted that those who choose long-haul flights for destinations in Oceania or Europe get more value for money by staying longer.
