Umrah is an act of worshipping Allah – the almighty in Islam. During the Umrah journey, you enter the state Ihram, circumnavigate Kaba (the holy city), run between Safa and Marwa mountain ranges, and trim or even shave your hair. Everyone in Islam dreams about performing the Umrah. This is a major pilgrimage. Umrah can be difficult due to the dependence on travel companies and high expenses.

Saudi Arabia has recently revised its government regulations, giving you the chance to perform Umrah independently. If you have a layover in any country, you can get a transit visa for 96 hours in Saudi Arabia. It would give you many chances to perform Umrah alone.

How can I obtain a Saudi Transit Visa on my own?

The process is easy and available to all nationalities. I am a Bangladeshi national who obtained a Saudi Arabia transit visa recently. To travel, you only need to purchase a ticket with Saudia, the flag carrier of the country, or Flynas – a budget airline. You cannot make Saudi Arabia your final destination. You must choose another country. I bought myself a ticket from Dhaka with a stopover in Jeddah to Istanbul. You can apply for a visa online when you buy a ticket. You will be asked to upload your photo and provide some information. Saudi Arabian Airlines does not charge a fee for applications; Flynas charges a fee of around 10 SAR.

The visa can be approved within minutes. It is valid for three months and comes with a 96 hour stay permit. It’s important that you know that the Saudia package comes with a free one-night stay at Mecca. I decided not to use it because you need to book at least two days ahead and the second night in the hotel is more expensive even with the free night.

Preparation for Umrah

Let’s now review the Umrah procedures. Trim your nails and shave the pubic and underarms hair. You cannot repeat them before the end of your Umrah.

Wearing Ihram Clothes

When performing Umrah you must wear Ihram, which is a kind of garment. This is simply two pieces unstitched of white cloth. The upper body is covered by one part, and the lower body by the other. A sandal must not cover the top part of your foot. Women are not obliged to wear Ihram.

Where to wear Ihram Clothes

The term “Miqat”, which is used in Saudi Arabia, refers to several locations. Before you cross one of the points, you need to be dressed in Ihram. As you will be flying, you will most likely cross one of the points before landing in Jeddah Airport. Saudia says this as she approaches a Miqat. If you do not wear Ihram clothing when you cross a Miqat, you will have to return to the Miqat and do it again. I put the Ihram clothes on before boarding my plane, since I intended to perform Umrah in Jeddah later that day. The flight was six hours long for me and I found it comfortable.

The purpose of Umrah

Many people believe this is incorrect. Ihram is a single article of clothing. When you enter the state Umrah when you intend to perform Umrah. You declare this intention when you don Ihram clothing before crossing the Miqat.

Talbiyyah

After declaring your intention of performing Umrah, you should recite Talbiyyah. You will now be in the Haram State. Before performing your Umrah you are not allowed to:

  • Covering the face and head of men and women
  • Using perfume
  • Clipping nails and hairs
  • Wearing any stitched garment
  • Putting on gloves
  • Intercourse
  • Hunting or killing something
  • Fighting anyone at all

How was the flight from Dhaka to Jedda?

The flight was unpleasant. The fleet was large with a high loading factor. However, I felt that the number of cabin attendants were insufficient. I was not given water even after requesting it. The food was not appealing either.

Immigration at Jeddah Airport

The landing at Jeddah Airport was flawless. We entered the airport via a boarding deck and didn’t need to walk too far to get to passport check. Immigration at Jeddah Airport also was simple. We had to wait between 10 and 15 minutes. The visa officer asked to see my ticket before allowing me through.

How to get to Mecca from Jeddah Airport

Bus

Signs are clearly visible directing you to leave the airport and use public transport. Follow the sign to exit the airport. Some large buses will be outside. You need to go and bargain there. It will cost you only SAR 50.

Taxi

You can book a taxi from the airport. Negotiation skills will determine price. Try to keep the price below SAR150. Taxis are more convenient when you arrive at the airport. If you do it inside the airport, it’s usually more expensive.

Train

The Haramain High Speed Railway offers a number of fast trains that run between the airports of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Mecca. Tickets can be ordered from this page. You can reach Mecca from the Jeddah Airport within 55 minutes. Haram Sharif can be reached by train in about 7 kilometers.

If you are traveling alone, and don’t need to carry a lot of baggage, this is an excellent alternative. Haramain’s high-speed rail is a great way to see Medinah if you want to go there as well.

Tawaf

Tawaf is “going around and round.” Tawaf must be performed before Umrah. You must circle the Holy Kaba seven anti-clockwise times.

Check into your hotel. Leave your luggage at the hotel. Then, take a bath when you arrive in Mecca. To do Umrah, you must first conduct ablution (Udhu). Umrah is not possible if you’re a woman and menstruating. When you are ready, go to Haram Sharif. At the end of this post, I will recommend a few hotels. If you choose one of these, you can easily walk to the Haram Sharif.

You will be allowed to enter the Tawaf area from the ground floor if you are wearing Ihram. This is important because if you reach the first or second floors, you will take a long time performing Tawaf. You will also have difficulty getting to the section where you run between Saafa Hills and Marwa Hills.

The black stone marks Tawaf’s beginning. Hazre Aswad is the name of this ritual. If you’re a man, you need to uncover your right side and place the dress in front of your right armpit. You should now walk with the Kaaba to your right. You should remember to point your finger every time you pass the black stone on the next spin and shout Allahu Akbar. During the remaining time recite any Hadith or Quran verses and perform the Jikr. After seven rounds, you will stop at the black stone.

Makam E Ibrahim

After seven times around the door, face the Kaaba. You will see that people are praying in front of the Kaba. Offer two rakats in prayer.

Drink Water From Zamzam

After the prayer, pour a glass full of water into your head and drink it standing up. You won’t have any trouble finding them, as they are well marked and strategically located. Plastic glasses are also available.

Sai between Saafa Hills & Marwa Hills

You must now go to the Saafa Mountains, and walk seven times in between the Saafa Mountains. Now it’s time to get to Marwah Hill. As soon as you see the green bar above you, you should start walking or running faster. Once the bar is no longer visible, you can resume your normal pace.

Arriving in Marwa after leaving Safa will be the start of your second lap. You will start the second lap when you return to Safa. Repeat this process up to seven times. If you do everything correctly, the final lap will finish on Marwah Hill. Sai is over for you at this point.

Cutting Your Hair

Hair cutting is the final step in Umrah. It is acceptable for women to cut one inch of hair. Many people carry a small scissor to cut their own hair.

For the boys, it is either shaving or trimming it to a very small size. You will find people who offer to take you to the salon if you exit near Marwa and turn right. Follow them. It will cost you approximately SAR 10. After this ritual is completed, you will leave the state of Haram. Your Umrah is complete.

Best Places to stay in Mecca

When selecting a Hotel, I gave priority to hotels that were within walking distance of the Masjid ul Haraam.

  1. Yasmin Al Majd: I stayed with them because they provide the finest value for money. The haraam-sharif is just 800 meters away. There are many fast food restaurants that serve delicious delicacies like wrapped chicken, wrapped salmon, chicken fries and more. This hotel is great because it is located directly across from a convenience shop.
  2. Emaar Al Khlil: This one is likewise fairly priced and conveniently located near the Haraam Sharif.
  3. Emar Al Manar: With a comparable price range to the two described above, this one is also a good buy in the same location.
  4. Swisshotel Makkah: If you are willing to pay money, there are just a few better options than Swisshotel Makkah. This is a short drive away and offers a view of Kaba.
  5. ZamZam Pullman Makkah Hotel: This is most likely the most affordable hotel in the clock tower. You’re within 100 metres of the Kaba, and you have a great view.
